At Legal Aid of Marin, our mission is to create an equitable Marin by empowering the community through legal representation, advocacy, and education. We envision an inclusive Marin with equal justice and opportunity for all.
Legal Aid of Marin is the pre-eminent free civil legal services provider in Marin County. Through direct legal services, impact litigation, community education, and policy advocacy, we demand justice and increase equity on behalf of communities that have been divested from equal opportunity, generational wealth, and institutional power.
As lawyers and advocates, we use our privilege to fight for accountability from those who mistakenly believe that the communities we serve are powerless.
LAM’S THEORY OF CHANGE
To achieve equitable outcomes and drive positive change within our community, Legal Aid of Marin uses a four-part strategy:
Direct Legal Services
We provide no-cost, client-centered legal services to marginalized Marin community members who need them. These cases further our mission by increasing access to justice client-by-client while informing our broader strategy by revealing systemic problems harming entire communities.
Impact Litigation
We take on strategic litigation to target large-scale injustice, deter future bad acts, and protect not just individual clients but entire communities.
Systems Change Advocacy
We work with community leaders and policymakers to change laws that address injustice at its root. This work benefits all marginalized communities in Marin and can ultimately rightsize the overwhelming need for individual legal services.
Community Outreach and Education
We meet communities in places where they live, work, and gather in partnership with trusted community-based social services organizations. Through our over 200 outreach events annually, we reduce barriers to accessing legal services, build trust, and empower community members to advocate for themselves.
