Our Impact

Each year, Legal Aid of Marin (LAM) provides thousands of Marin residents with direct civil legal services, education, and resources. Our priorities include:

• Recovering wages for immigrant workers
• Advocating for tenants and enforcing renter protections
• Providing legal services that prevent homelessness and preserve housing
• Restoring driver’s licenses and alleviating poverty through the Marin Community Court program
• Growing access to pro bono legal services in partnership with the private bar
• Connecting residents to community-based organizations that provide social services

Our staff works collaboratively with community partners across Marin, practicing client-centered and trauma-informed lawyering to expand access to the civil justice system.

Summary

LAM seeks a passionate, client-centered attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice to support, educate, and represent members of Marin’s low-income immigrant communities. Reporting to the Legal Director and collaborating with the Pro Bono Manager, the Immigration Justice Staff Attorney will help design, launch, and implement a place-based, community-informed immigration legal services program.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide community-informed immigration legal services to marginalized immigrants living in Marin County
• Conduct client interviews, factual analysis, and legal research
• Offer legal education, brief advice, consultation, and services in the community; staff off-site outreach, intake, and clinic events, including one eight-hour day per week at North Marin Community Services and additional time at other community-based organizations as needed
• Supervise and train legal assistants, interns, and volunteers as needed
• Coordinate closely with the Legal Director and staff to ensure high-quality services
• Participate in training and mentorship as required
• Attend convenings, conferences, and events as required
• Maintain records to measure outcomes, meet funder and ethical requirements, and support organizational development and fundraising
• Provide accurate data for reporting to the Programs Officer and Executive Director and
• Complete additional mission-aligned tasks supporting LAM’s expansion into immigration legal services

Qualifications

• Commitment to the mission and vision of Legal Aid of Marin;
• Member in good standing of a State Bar (California membership preferred);
• At least two (2) years of experience practicing immigration law, including experience in removal proceedings;
• Commitment to advancing social justice and serving traditionally marginalized communities, including immigrants, BIPOC individuals, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, people experiencing poverty, and people experiencing housing instability
• Ability to develop skills on the job and tailor services to community needs
• Interest in helping expand a new programmatic area
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a close-knit team
• Openness to feedback and growth
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
• Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and car insurance
• Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred

Compensation and Benefits

• Exempt position with a starting salary range of $85,000 to $90,000, depending on experience

Remote Work

This position is authorized for remote work two days per week. Two days per week must be performed at LAM’s office in San Rafael, California. One day per week must be performed at North Marin Community Services’ campus in Novato. Remote work requires approval by the Legal Director and may change based on organizational needs.
